ON THIS DAY - 27 October 1561
On This Day (27 Oct) 1561, Lady Mary Sidney, later Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, was born at Tickenhall Manor, Bewdley; the daughter of Sir Henry Sidney and his wife Mary Dudley.
Tumblr media
At the time of her birth, father Henry had been appointed as Lord President of the Council in Wales, whilst mother Mary was a member of Elizabeth I's court, being a Gentlewoman of the Privy Council, and subsequent close confidant of the queen.
Tumblr media
Mary was the younger sister of Sir Philip Sidney, the Elizabethan soldier and poet, who famously composed 'Astrophel and Stella', said to be inspired by Lady Penelope Devereux, the stepdaughter of their uncle, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Along with her brother, she received a classical humanist education, including learning Latin, Greek, French and Italian, prior to attending court; their mother having contracted smallpox in 1562, leaving her permanently scarred and disfigured, subsequently restricting her own attendance at court.
By 1577, Mary had married Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, in a union arranged by her uncle Robert Dudley; this marriage, the third for the older Earl, produced 4 children, including sons William and Philip. William Shakespeare's 'First Folio, published in 1623, was dedicated to these "incomparable pair of brethren".
Tumblr media
Mary herself was one of the most prolific female writers, translators and literary patrons in late 16th and early 17th England. She provided a base at her home Wilton House, near Salisbury, for the gathering of influential writers and poets of the day, including Edmund Spenser (author of 'The Faerie Queen' c.1590) and Samuel Daniel, later tutor to Lady Anne Clifford. Along with her husband, Mary also provided patronage to 'Pembroke's Men', one of the first companies to perform Shakespeare's and Christopher Marlow's work in the 1590s.
Tumblr media
Mary died on 21 Sep 1621 in London of smallpox - the same illness from which her mother had suffered greatly from in 1562, whilst caring for the sick Elizabeth. Following a grand funeral held at St Paul's Cathedral, Mary's coffin was taken to Salisbury Cathedral, where she was interred in the vaults alongside her husband Henry Herbert (d.1601), and later joined by her two sons William (d.1630) and Philip (d.1649).

Levina Teerlinc
Levina Teerlinc is an almost forgotten female painter from the 16th century. Alongside Susannah Horenbout (1503-54), Teerlinc was one of the earliest women in Britain to be named an artist. As is a common feature of this era, written histories have failed to record Teerlinc’s activities because she was a woman. Although there are works attributed to Teerlinc, they are not certain. CW: DRUGS
Drugs don't have any effect on Billy and his family while they're powered up and any drugs they consume while powered up have no effect on their mortal bodies
Hence why, around Fawcett, you can very often see the members of the Shazamily munching on some cocaine or heroin (-Darla, she's still not allowed)
Nobody knows where they keep getting the drugs and they prefer it to stay that way (they steal it from goons they beat up that have it)

Freddy and Eugene seem like the type of kids to swear as much as possible if given the excuse
Also most of my info about the other kids (Darla, Eugene, Pedro) is coming from the movies and fics, so don’t take it to heart if it’s inaccurate.

No because I actually wanna talk more about Billy getting a call/email about his dad’s remains years later, because the concept is just so life-altering.
Like, imagine that you’re Billy, who had to deal with his father never coming home and his sister not remembering much from before. After years of dealing with all the hurt and trauma, he’s finally at a place he likes. He’s older, he has his sister back, and they’re extremely close. He has friends in and out of the hero community. He’s trusted within that community. He has a good job. He makes enough so he’s not starving. And while the wounds from his parents’ brutal deaths are still there, they aren’t as bad. They’re healing slowly, but healing nonetheless.
And then everything comes crashing down. And whatever point he gets the email or phone call does not matter. That’s honestly one of the worst parts of this. He could be waking up to a new day. Going to bed.ar the watchtower. Doing his job. Going on a date. Going out with the JL. He could be doing ANYTHING and it wouldn’t matter.
And it’s more likely for him to get an email about it. Idk why I think this, but I do. So you can probably imagine how it feels for him to get a random email from a random @ that says “C.C. Batson’s Remains Found”. Like, what the fuck do you mean? What do you MEAN?
Ebenezer got the email. He is absolutely fuming and refuses to have anything to do with it, so it’s left to Billy, because of course it is.
What does he look like to the League? To his friends? One moment, he’s the same as he’s ever been, talking and laughing and finally acting like the child he is at heart, and then his phone lights up and he reads something on it—
He goes completely pale. He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t react when someone touches him or says anything. He just stutters out that he needs to go and asks for a sick day, or a sick week, or a sick whatever, because he doesn’t care. He just makes a run for it before anyone can ask.
They try to ask around, but Mary and Junior are offline soon after him. Dudley suspends Captain Marvel Inc.. Whiz Radio announces that the Whiz Kid segment will be doing reruns for the next two months. Diana is getting missed calls from all of her Fawcett war buddies.
Meanwhile, Billy spends agonizing days, weeks, waiting for his father’s remains to finally come home. There are warnings. From Adam. From Dudley. Hell, from the email sender. All about how gruesome C.C. looks. And billy is angry because that’s his father and he shouldn’t be so disgusted about finally seeing him again.
And then he finally does get to see him. He gets to see his dad after so many years. His ACTUAL, real dad, and not just Captain Marvel on the tv screen—
And he can’t look. He can’t. He just looks too

Billy throws up all over the good-looking clothes he bought, because he thought the quality would make up for that entire situation. But of course it doesn’t.
Dad’s home, and Billy, for the first time, wishes he wasn’t. When he’s finally in the ground, next to his wife, next to their daughter’s empty coffin, all he can do is cry in shame.

Marvel Fusion
So basically, what if the Marvel’s could fuse? This is also my first time writing about the other Shazamily members so yeah!
A Billy and Mary fusion would probably happen when the two of them are the only ones on duty, or it could’ve happened when the only members of the family were Billy, Mary, and Freddy, and let’s say Freddy isn’t there. Their fusion would be an androgynous person, because they’re two different genders. As for their new costume, since Mary wears a skirt, and Billy doesn’t, their fusion could have flared pants maybe? Mary also has short sleeves, while Billy has long ones so their fusion’s sleeves would probably go to about their elbows. And of course, fusion would make the two stronger since Mary’s blessings a Billy’s blessings might stack. Or, the fusion would only be slightly stronger. Who knows?
Billy and Darla = If they fused it might’ve just been for fun. No real danger needed. They’d probably looked mixed and androgynous. They’d also likely have a pinkish magenta suit, Darla’s suit doesn’t have sleeves, Billy’s does so like with Mary they would probably come up to about halfway up their arms. Darla’s super fast and Billy has Mercury so their fusion’s sleeves might be super duper uper fast.
Billy and Pedro = Their fusion might happen when they need to combine their strength to fight a monster or demon. Their suit would be brownish I think, and they’d look like slightly tan, Hispanic white man if that makes sense. Since Pedro has facial hair in his Marvel form, and Billy doesn’t, their fusion might have some although not as much as Pedro.

they officially cancelled My Lady Jane after only one season because it apparently “didn’t find a broad enough audience”. i’m disappointed but not surprised, unfortunately it’s just one more name in the very long list of too-soon cancelled shows with incredible potential.

ON THIS DAY - 25 October 1562
On This Day (25 Oct) in 1562, Elizabeth I resumed her normal duties whilst at Hampton Court Palace, rapidly improving from the potentially deathly smallpox that she had been suffering from over the past 2 weeks.
Tumblr media
Smallpox, a highly contagious viral disease, had ravished London and the Royal Court during the summer of 1562; Margaret St John, Countess of Bedford, (and mother to Anne Russell, later the Countess of Warwick) had fallen victim to it in Aug 1562. It had a high mortality rate (approx 30%), particularly with the young, elderly and vulnerable, and could leave those who survived permanently disfigured.
Tumblr media
Smallpox was identified by early symptoms, including a high fever, fatigue, severe back pain, abdominal pain and vomiting, with the characteristic rash of bumps full of clear liquid (which would then fill with pus) forming 2-3 days later. The rash would start on the face and hands, and then spread to the rest of the body, which would then ulcerate and scab. The incubation period for the virus would last 7-10 days, with a person being infectious once the fever developed, and remaining so until the last scabs fell off.
Tumblr media
On 10 Oct, Elizabeth first started feeling unwell whilst at Hampton Court; she reportedly took a bath and went for a 'bracing' walk outside to try and feel better, but ended up 'catching a chill'. This was unsuccessful, as within an hour she had taken to her bed with a fever. Her German physician, Dr Burcot was called, and he gave the initial diagnosis of smallpox; however, this theory was dismissed by others, due to the lack of other symptoms, including the rash.
Tumblr media
Elizabeth's health continued to decline over the next few days, with her fever continuing to worsen, and by 16 Oct, she was presenting with fluctuating levels of consciousness. It was at this time that the queen's cousin, Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon persuaded Dr Burcot to resume his treatment - according to historian Alison Weir, Elizabeth was 'wrapped in red flannel', 'laid on a pallet beside a fire' and 'given a green potion', all with good effect. Lesions started to appear on her hands, being the natural progression of the illness; Elizabeth started to improve quickly, although she remained in bed for a further 6 days.
Tumblr media
During her illness, Elizabeth had been cared for by one of her primary ladies-in-waiting, Mary Dudley, Lady Sidney. the wife of Sir Henry Sidney and sister of Elizabeth's 'favourite' Robert Dudley. Mary herself contracted smallpox; unlike Elizabeth, who reportedly was able to cover her pock-marked skin with heavy makeup for the rest of her life, Mary retreated from court life, due to her disfigurement, although would continue to greet the queen in private.

Hey y'all!
I'm back with another oneshot! This one was written for @pantheonofcoffee as a part of @dcufans4palestine
Summary: Billy wasn't entirely sure how he'd managed it, but somehow he’d convinced just about everyone— his teachers, classmates, employers, and even the entire Justice League—that he was a single father of six rather than a semi-homeless preteen.
Oddly enough that might end up being a good thing
